Subsea Controls: A Complete Guide to Systems, Operations & Engineering

How do subsea wells communicate with the surface? How are valves operated thousands of metres below the sea? And what happens when a subsea control system fails?

Subsea control systems are among the most sophisticated technologies in the offshore oil and gas industry. They are the brains and nervous system of subsea production operations, enabling engineers to control, monitor and safely operate wells located in deep and ultra-deep waters.

Whether you are a mechanical engineer, electrical engineer, instrumentation specialist, petroleum engineer or aspiring subsea professional, this course will take you inside the technology that makes modern subsea production possible.

What Will You Learn?

This comprehensive course takes you through the complete subsea production control system, connecting individual components into one integrated engineering picture.

You will explore:

1. Subsea Control Fundamentals

Why subsea control systems exist and the engineering challenges they solve.
Evolution of subsea control technologies.
Direct hydraulic, piloted hydraulic, sequenced hydraulic and multiplexed electro-hydraulic systems.

2. Subsea Control System Architecture

Understanding the complete architecture of a subsea production control system.
Master Control Station (MCS), Subsea Control Module (SCM) and Subsea Electronics Module (SEM).
Electrical Power Units (EPU), Hydraulic Power Units (HPU) and distribution systems.

3. Critical Subsea Equipment

Umbilicals and their electrical, hydraulic, communication and chemical injection functions.
Subsea Control Modules (SCM): design, components and operation.
Hydraulic circuits, accumulators, directional control valves and actuators.
Electrical power distribution and subsea communication systems.

4. Instrumentation and Safety

Subsea sensors, instrumentation and feedback systems.
Fail-safe design philosophy.
Emergency Shutdown (ESD), safety interlocks and High Integrity Pressure Protection Systems (HIPPS).

5. Operations and Engineering Applications

Master Control Station (MCS) operation and monitoring.
Subsea well startup, normal operation and shutdown procedures.
Emergency shutdown and well scan management.
Systematic troubleshooting and fault diagnosis.
Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), system integration testing and offshore commissioning.

Who Should Take This Course?

This course is particularly valuable for:

Subsea engineers looking to strengthen their technical knowledge.
Mechanical, electrical and instrumentation engineers working in offshore projects.
Petroleum and production engineers involved in subsea field development and operations.
ROV engineers and offshore technicians involved in subsea intervention and maintenance.
Graduate engineers and engineering students aspiring to enter the subsea oil and gas industry.
Experienced offshore professionals seeking a structured understanding of subsea control technologies.

A Visual and Structured Learning Experience

The course uses professionally structured technical presentations, diagrams and AI-generated English narration to explain complex engineering concepts in a clear, accessible and organized way.

The AI narration is used as a delivery tool to support the learning experience, while the focus remains on technical accuracy, engineering principles and practical understanding.

Why Take This Course?

Subsea control engineering is not just about understanding individual components. It is about understanding how communications, electrical power, hydraulics, instrumentation, mechanical systems and safety functions work together to control a subsea production facility.

By the end of this course, you will have a structured understanding of the complete subsea control system and how its different components interact throughout the lifecycle of an offshore development.

Start your journey into Subsea Controls Engineering and develop the knowledge to understand the technology operating beneath the ocean.
