Project risk management should produce better decisions, not just another spreadsheet.

Many project teams maintain risk registers without establishing consistent assessment rules, clear ownership, effective responses, or reliable monitoring. As a result, risks may be recorded but not properly managed.

Practical Project Risk Management: From Scratch is a hands-on course designed to help you build and operate a structured project risk management system, step by step.

Rather than studying disconnected concepts, you will work through a realistic fictional case: Wadi Al-Nour Pumping Station, an infrastructure project with procurement, design, construction, utility, safety, and commissioning interfaces.

You will develop the risk management process using practical documents, a connected Excel workbook, and consistent project information.

What You Will Build and Learn

Risk Management Plan: Establish the methodology, responsibilities, assessment criteria, escalation rules, monitoring arrangements, and document controls.
Project Risk Context: Define the project objectives, boundaries, risk categories, probability scales, and impact thresholds.
Risk Identification: Identify threats and opportunities and develop clear cause-event-effect statements.
Risk Register: Create structured records with permanent identifiers, accountable owners, triggers, and supporting evidence.
Risk Assessment: Evaluate probability and impact, calculate qualitative scores, and prioritize exposures using a 5x5 risk matrix.
Risk Responses: Select appropriate strategies and develop actionable responses with owners, deadlines, estimated costs, and verification requirements.
Risk Monitoring: Record reviews, evaluate new evidence, update assessments, track actions, and verify closure conditions.
Risk Dashboard: Use connected Excel calculations to monitor exposure, action status, and risk trends.
Executive Reporting: Translate risk information into clear management summaries, escalation requests, and decisions.

Learn Through One Connected Project Case

Throughout the course, you will progressively develop the same working system rather than complete unrelated exercises.

The case includes twelve identified risks, covering ten threats and two opportunities, and develops into response actions, monitoring records, dashboard outputs, and executive decision requests.

You will also explore an essential professional principle: a numerical risk score does not replace judgment, delegated authority, or mandatory safety controls.

Practical Resources Included

The course provides an editable Risk Management Plan template, a worked example, a structured Excel starter workbook, case exercises, and a completed reference workbook.

These resources are intended to help you understand the process, complete the exercises, and adapt the approach to your own projects.

Who Should Take This Course?

This course is designed for Project Managers, Risk Coordinators, Project Engineers, Project Controls Professionals, PMO teams, consultants, and aspiring project managers.

No previous project risk management experience is required. You will begin with the fundamentals and progressively build a practical working system.

By the end of the course, you will understand not only how to identify and assess project risks, but also how to manage them through evidence, ownership, response actions, monitoring, and informed decisions.

Start building a project risk management system you can actually use.
