DevOps Essentials: Git, CI/CD, Containers & Monitoring

Modern software teams need reliable ways to manage code, automate delivery, maintain consistent environments and identify problems in running systems. DevOps brings together practices and tools that help development and operations work more effectively throughout the software delivery process.

This course introduces the foundational concepts behind DevOps and explains the role of several important practices, including version control, continuous integration and delivery, containers, configuration management, monitoring and logging.

Whether you are exploring DevOps as a career path or want to understand how modern software delivery works, this course provides a starting point for learning the terminology, tools and workflows involved.

What will you learn?

DevOps fundamentals

Understand the purpose of DevOps and how its principles relate to software development, deployment and IT operations.

Version control with Git

Explore how Git helps teams track code changes, maintain version history and collaborate on software projects.

Continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD)

Learn the basic concepts behind CI/CD and how automation can help teams integrate changes and deliver software more consistently.

Containers and containerisation

Understand what containers are, why they are useful, and how they help applications run in more consistent environments.

Configuration management

Explore the purpose of configuration management and how it supports consistency across systems and environments.

Monitoring and logging

Understand how monitoring and logs help teams observe system behaviour, investigate issues and maintain operational visibility.

Who should take this course?

This course is suitable for beginners, aspiring DevOps professionals, junior developers, IT operations professionals and students interested in software engineering or modern IT practices.

You do not need previous DevOps experience to get started. Basic familiarity with computers and software applications will help you follow the concepts and exercises.

What will you take away?

By the end of the course, you will have a foundational understanding of DevOps and the roles that Git, CI/CD, containers, configuration management, monitoring and logging play in software delivery.

This is an introductory course rather than an advanced implementation or certification-preparation programme. It provides a basis for further study of DevOps tools and workflows.

Course Author

Alex Amoroso, PhD

Senior UX Researcher | Research, Product & Learning Design

Alex Amoroso is a researcher, educator, and course designer with more than 10 years of professional experience in UX and product research, behavioural research, and complex problem-solving, alongside extensive experience in professional and academic education.

Her work focuses on a simple question: what is actually going on, what evidence do we have, and what should we do with it?

Across research, product, and organisational environments, she has worked on complex problems involving user behaviour, digital products, analytics, customer experience, decision-making, and innovation. Her research has included studies with thousands of users across B2B and B2C environments, combining qualitative and quantitative methods to investigate problems, challenge assumptions, interpret evidence, and support better decisions.

Alongside her professional research work, Alex teaches doctoral-level research design and methodologies, supervises and assesses research projects, and has developed approximately 30 online courses across research, UX, product, data, analytics, customer experience, business, and decision-making. Selected courses are also available through Udemy Business.

Her approach to teaching is practical and structured: clarify the subject, organise the thinking, distinguish evidence from assumption, and turn complex information into knowledge that can be applied.

She holds a PhD in Health Anthropology, with research focused on human behaviour, environmental stress, and quantitative data analysis, and has published research in peer-reviewed journals.

Across her courses, she combines:

Research-based thinking
Practical frameworks and methods
Real-world examples and applications
Clear explanations of complex subjects
Exercises, tools, and techniques that support practical learning

Her goal is simple: to help learners understand complex subjects, think more clearly, and apply what they learn in real professional situations.
